LO - Speaking the Language of The Book Whisperer
online May 2025
Share
Donalyn Miller’s The Book Whisperer has spoken to many classroom teachers and schools, and, as a result, the teaching of reading is changing. With the promise of “awakening the inner reader in every child”. The thought-provoking text asks several things of classroom teachers: What kind of reader are you, and why? How are you promoting reading? How are you teaching whole-class novels? Are there ways that the teacher is ruining the reading experience? Why do you teach reading the way you do? What about programs like Accelerated Reader? What “rights” do readers have? We’ll have great discussions about methods for teaching reading, and teachers will also receive and create a huge toolbox of printable and practical ideas and resources they can use related to student response to reading, discussion strategies, reading workshop, lessons, plans, genres, and what Miller calls the 40 Book Challenge. We’ll also spend some time creating classroom activities and plans to fit the philosophy of Miller, plans that will motivate the most reluctant of readers. This course is great for you if you''re ready to discuss, learn, and grow! Participants will need to obtain a copy of "The Book Whisperer" by Donalyn Miller ISBN: 978-0-470-37227-2
